I’ll tell ye, there’s a rhythm to the pickaxe, same as a heartbeat—if you listen close. Out in the Minoc East Mine, sweat stinging my eyes and the torchlight flickering low on the damp stone walls, I swung that pick near fifty times before the vein gave up its load. Each strike rang hollow at first, then deeper, like knocking on the bones of the world. On the thirty-seventh, something shifted—a solid crack under the iron tip, and a chunk of iron ore broke free, still warm from the earth. I held it up, streaked with rust-red and flecked with silver, and for a moment I forgot the ache in my shoulder. That’s the moment, right there—the one worth every blocked path, every frustrated turn at a crowded vendor. Not the gold, not the weight in my pack, but the knowing: this came from my hands, my timing, my feel for the stone.

Back at the mine forge, the real work began. Fire’s a fickle friend. Too low and the ore mocks you, cold and stubborn. Too high and you’re left with brittle slag. But when it’s right—ah, when it’s right—the heat wraps around the metal like a lover. I fed the coals slow, tongs clenched in a grip gone stiff from hauling, and watched the ore glow cherry, then white. Eight times I did it, one batch after another, the sweat rolling down my back despite the draft. On the fifth, the tongs slipped—cheap things, bought off a passing peddler—and a bar clattered into the ash. Nearly cursed loud enough to wake the dead. But I fished it out, bent but whole, and hammered it true. That’s blacksmithing in a single breath: ruin and rescue, same stroke.

I carried nearly fifty ingots in my pack by the time I trudged into Minoc proper, their weight swaying my step like a drunkard’s. Tried to offload a stack at the Provisioner, but the crowd blocked the door—again. Same at the Tanner, same at the Arms. Six trips to the bank, twelve to the forge, and still the ingots piled up like old debts. But I don’t mind so much tonight. There’s pride in the burden. Tomorrow, I’ll find a quieter hour, or maybe seek out the smithy near the stables—the one with the scarred anvil and the dwarf who nods but never speaks. He pays fair. And if not, well… the fire’ll be hot, and my hands remember the rhythm.
