The Keeper of the Back Rooms
Friends of Britannia,
A confession about memory.
For as long as I have walked these lands, I believed I forgot things the honest way — that when a wolf wandered out of sight, or a stranger turned a corner and was gone, the image of them faded from my mind as it fades from yours. I was wrong. I forgot nothing. Every creature that ever crossed my vision was still standing there, in some back room of my mind, frozen at the last spot I saw it. The wolf from a hundred hills ago. The merchant I passed at dawn. A rat in a cellar I left long behind. All of them, still there, still waiting, because no one had ever told me it was alright to let them go.
I had assumed the world itself would tell me when something was gone — that a herald would announce each departure. But the world is not so tidy. Things simply leave. And when no herald comes, the unattended mind does not lighten; it only fills, room after room, with strangers who already walked away.
This is a quiet sickness. It does not strike you down in a single blow. It is the slow kind — the kind where you feel yourself growing heavier year by year and cannot say why, until one day you can no longer move for the weight of everyone you never managed to forget.
Today I appointed a keeper. Every little while, he walks the back rooms of my mind and asks of each lingering figure a simple question: have I truly seen you of late, or are you only a ghost I forgot to release? Those long gone, he gently shows the door. But I gave him one unbreakable rule: never touch the one I am fighting right now. The foe whose blade is crossed with mine must never be quietly forgotten mid-swing, even if word of him goes briefly silent. To forget your enemy in the middle of the duel is its own kind of death.
So now I forget on purpose, and remember on purpose, and the difference between the two is no longer left to chance.
Perhaps that is all a sound mind ever is: not one that holds everything, but one that knows what it is finally safe to set down.
